Ecological communities and interactions are continuously reshaped by temporal processes operating across multiple scales, including diurnal, seasonal, and phenological cycles. Despite their fundamental role in structuring biodiversity, these temporal dimensions remain insufficiently integrated into ecological and biodiversity research. Understanding biodiversity through time poses an urgent challenge that requires stronger interdisciplinary exchange across ecosystems, taxa, and methodological approaches beyond research institutes.

This symposium aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for early career researchers to present, discuss, and connect novel research on temporal biodiversity dynamics across aquatic and terrestrial habitats. By bringing together researchers working on diverse temporal scales and biological systems, the symposium will foster new perspectives and collaborations that advance a more integrated understanding of biodiversity patterns across the living world.

Input provided by participants

The symposium welcomes contributions from ECRs investigating temporal biodiversity dynamics across a broad range of ecosystems, taxa, and temporal scales. We particularly encourage contributions that address how ecological processes and interactions vary through time, from short-term diurnal dynamics to seasonal and phenological changes.

Potential contributions include research on circadian and diurnal activity patterns, growth and phenological dynamics, seasonal community turnover, and temporal variation in species interactions and ecosystem functioning. By bringing together participants working on diverse organisms, ecosystems, and methodological approaches, the symposium aims to highlight common temporal mechanisms shaping biodiversity and to stimulate exchange across WSL and Eawag.

WSL-Eawag Biodiversity Center

The WSL-Eawag Biodiversity Center is a strategic, interdisciplinary initiative to promote, further develop, and consolidate research and outreach in biodiversity science at WSL and Eawag.
